Easter is just around the corner, and what could be better than taking the time to lovingly create little things yourself? Today we’re showing you a very special idea: naturally dyeing eggs – completely without artificial colors, but with ingredients you might even already have at home.
For me, this is a very special moment every year because I used to dye eggs together with my Oma. With simple means, lots of patience, and lots of love – and that feeling has stayed with me to this day.

What you need:
- white eggs
- Flour
- ground turmeric
- Herbs or flowers of your choice
- (red) onion skins
- Newspaper
- Scissors
- Yarn
Step-by-step instructions
1. Preparation
Lightly moisten your chosen herbs or flowers with water and then dip them in some flour. This helps them stick better to the egg and prevents color from penetrating those spots later.
2. Placing
Carefully place the herbs on the egg and secure them with yarn by wrapping it once around.

3. Adding color
Now also place onion skins around the egg and sprinkle some turmeric on top.
The natural ingredients later create warm, earthy tones.

4. Wrapping
Carefully wrap the egg in newspaper and secure the small package again with yarn.
5. Cooking
Place the wrapped eggs in boiling water and let them steep for about 15 minutes.
This way, the color naturally bonds with the shell.

6. Unwrapping
After cooking, you can carefully unwrap the eggs under running water.
Remove yarn, paper, and leaves – and discover your very own pattern ✨
More natural dyeing options
Besides onion skins and turmeric, there are many other ways to naturally dye eggs.
Especially beautiful are, for example:
- Brazilwood (e.g., available at the pharmacy) for warm, reddish tones
- Beetroot for strong pink shades
- Spinach or parsley for delicate green tones
- Coffee or black tea for natural brown tones
This way, you can play with colors individually and discover new results again and again.
Our tip
Each egg turns out different – and that’s exactly what makes this technique so special.
Play with different herbs, flowers, and colors to find your very own look.
Little moments that last
Especially around Easter, it’s often the little things that bring us the most joy. A quiet afternoon, a bit of creativity, and maybe memories from the past coming back to life. Maybe this will even become a little tradition for you. Feel free to tell us which tradition has accompanied you since childhood.
