They occur as the silver reacts with the chemicals in the air. The more often you wear your new favorite jewelry, the more likely you are to avoid these signs, as minor discolorations are easily removed through friction. You can also delay the oxidation process by storing your jewelry as airtight as possible. It's best to store your silver jewelry in a closed jewelry box rather than in an open jewelry dish.
